It was a little intimidating to be told I was to follow in the footsteps of my editor, Brooky Brown, and take over the Cruisin’ column, but I put on a brave front and hit the road. My first stop was a 32-acre oasis on De Soto road called Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities. Because it’s tucked away near Honore, I never even knew the place was there and it’s been in the same location for 57 years. Community Haven is an amazing treasure, where people with mental and physical disabilities have the opportunity to live and work, and earn a paycheck in the process. But more on that later. I was to meet with Jim Wolfe, who is the horticulture specialist at the center. No sooner had I introduced myself to Jim than I was greeted by Alex, who seemed very excited to see me. Jim said Alex was a huge Three Stooges fan and watched their show every night on TV. We talked for a few minutes and Alex showed me the Moe T-shirt he was wearing under his heavier, long-sleeved shirt.
